Coelacanth Endangered Fish by Eliea Coelacanth Endangered Fish by Eliea
"In 1989, the coelacanth was declared an endangered species by the international community. Their current world population is believed to be fewer than 500 animals. This means that without protection, this prehistoric animal that has survived for over 350 million years could be wiped out in our lifetime. "

true about these fish, talk about lucky they actually survived that far, not mention they are awesome fish to learn of how they lived millions of years ago.

If Animal Crossing has taught me anything, it's that these things are RARE!

Ive seen this stamp around a few times but for a different animal. I'm all for protecting endangered species but my real question is; what is and isn't considered a "real" endangered species and why? I thought that if the animal is below a certain population number that it gets accounted for as an endangered species. The only case that i can imagine it not being actually endangered is those few moments or days before it gets take off the list and is accounted for as a thriving healthy species.

I agree. I typed it that way as some still believe animals like wolves and foxes to be endangered when it's specific species of them and not all of them.

I love coelacanths! They are sooooo beautiful in an out of this world kind of way and an inspiration to women who want to be scientists as they were discovered by a woman! She was the curator of a museum and the coelacanth's genus Latimeria is named after her - Marjorie Courtenay-Latimer! If you're interested in them you should read "A Fish Caught in Time", it's the story of the coelacanth's discovery and then trying to find another one as the first was spoilt because they didn't preserve it in time.

I think Coelacanths are pretty awesome~ :3 Also, the Pokemon Relicanth IS based on the Coelacanth. XD Two species of them, actually. Anyway, I really hope they don't go extinct.
PS: I can also mention another animal that is really endangered... yet hardly a thing is being done to save them. o-o

Yeah, it is. [link] There's many species of Coqui, but... almost all of them are in danger of extinction and hardly any of them are known by people. D: And scientists aren't even sure if the Golden Coqui [link] and the Web-footed Coqui [link] are extinct since they stopped trying to learn more about them in the 70's and at the beginning of the 80's. Plus many of the Coqui species are dying off in Puerto Rico, and in Hawaii the Coquis are being killed off because people there can't stand their sound.

Uh huh! What's even worse is that in the island they're native to, Puerto Rico, there's hardly anything being done to protect them. ;A; I haven't heard of any groups claiming that they're protecting the Coqui in PR.

Alll I keep hearing of here in the news is of politics this and politics that. I just wish they would at least try to protect the Coqui. Or at least adopt the laws the US has when it comes to animal protection and welfare.

It probably is a similarity. I mean many of the pokemon are based off real animals. Though some are made up.

Makes me wish they were more popular. But I guess they're kind of like ferrets. Not many people around here love them. :(

How sad. For both critters! Ferrets are cute and quite fun critters. (I have one currently but have had a total of 6)
Personally I think Coelacanth's are cute too.

Indeed! ^^ I have to fuzzy ferrets myself and I love them to death. And coelacanth's are very cute.

:) Do you find that people just don't realize how fun and adorable they are till they've interacted with one? I've noticed that about people I know. For example I post a picture of my cat or dog on facebook and it gets loads of likes and comments.
My little fuzz butt get nothing. It's so SAD! And I find most people just don't realize how fun and cute they can be.

:iconsiogaagusarrachtaigh:
Yeah, I noticed that too.I think the problem is that when people look at the ferrets features they automatically think "ew, rodent". Which sucks since they're not even in the rodent family. I personally think they're cuter than rodents. ^^

I think so too. Though I have owned rats to and found them cute and smart in their own unique ways. I think it must be the ears. though I personally think they look so different than rodents I think you are right most people associate them with them for some reason.

pretty much anything is more interesting than a wolf in my opinion. Just becasue you hear so much about wolves all the time. I prefer to learn about other animals as well and find them all fascinating. :)

Coelacanths are so cute!

A suggestion for the series:
Sharks and monkfish might be endangered or at risk too because people overfish them and they have been classified as "at risk"... I just hope they are no longer at risk...

I'll check them out! I'm really only doing animals and fish that are endangered not just at risk at the moment. But I hope to branch out eventually!
The hope is that others will learn more about endangered critters and that there are more than just the fluffy ones, and popular ones.

i tried doing a report back in middle school about the endagerment of the coelacanth, but everyone was like "eew, why should we save that when there's so many cuter things like pandas and wolves?" i mean, i like pandas and wolves, but coelacanths>both of them, in my opinion. sorry, i went a bit off topic there, i love this stamp.

If its furry and has big, dark eyes, it's endangered.
If it has scales, is slimy or venomose it's doomed.

That's especially horrible for me because I like snakes WAY more than I like wolves...(I still like wolves, but snakes are my favorite animals, and they are more at risk...)

ThankyouthankyouthankyouTHANKYOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS STAMP.

God. It's like "Oh noes the foxes/wolves/cute fuzzy species of rodent is dyyyyying" when, in reality, the Coelacanth is relatively unheard of by most people while the cutesy-wootsy *endangered* animals get everybody's pity.
